A perfect body after pregnancy, or what abdominal plastic surgery can do

During pregnancy, a woman’s body changes substantially, and not everyone is able to regain their previous forms. Sometimes the stomach protrudes, even after exercising intensely. Doctor of plastic and reconstructive surgery Gabrielė Latakaitė at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre helps women to recover their lost beauty.
Why doesn’t everyone gets lucky in getting rid of their post-pregnancy belly bulge?
As the foetus develops, the uterus increases and so the pressure on the abdominal muscles going vertically down from the ribs increases too. “If the pressure is very strong, the abdominal muscles separate – a gap appears between them that doesn’t return to the initial position following childbirth. As a result, a stomach bulge remains. Unfortunately, physical exercises don’t help it contract. Diastasis occurs for very sporty women too, especially if they are carrying twins or a very large foetus,” said the doctor of plastic and reconstructive surgery Gabrielė Latakaitė.
Aesthetic surgery helps bring back the love for one’s body
“In abdominal plastic surgery, the abdominal muscles are brought back together and closer, the laxity of the abdominal wall is eliminated, and the waistline is made more defined and beautiful. This is beauty or so-called aesthetic operation. However, I can assuredly say that aesthetic operations also have a healing function – they help women to go back to loving their bodies again and simultaneously regaining their self-esteem. Often postnatal women have a complex about these body changes, feel ugly and start avoiding their husbands, who in turn believe that they’ve become distant because a baby has been born. Beautification of the body in many cases does not allow this wicked circle of negative emotions and miscommunication to gain momentum,” said Gabrielė Latakaitė, a doctor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.
When is abdominal plastic surgery recommended?
Abdominal plastic surgery should be performed when a woman plans no more pregnancies.
“The abdominal plastic operation itself will do no harm whatsoever to prospective pregnancies. However, during pregnancy, the abdominal muscles can separate again and the effect will be there no more; the procedure will have to be repeated,” explained Gabrielė Latakaitė, a doctor of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
According to her, the case of each individual patient is unique. Some women need only a touching-up of the abdominal contour, whereas others also require removing the excess fat from the waist. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also a test to women’s breasts, which often lose their shape, droop and dry out. “During the consultation, we discuss with the patient the things that worry them the most and what they would like to correct. It often happens that during the same anesthetization we perform combined plastic operations – abdominal plastic, breast lifting or augmentation, and removal of excess fat,” explained the doctor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.
Care while healing
Although changes in the figure can be seen immediately following the abdominal plastic operation, the final results will start bringing joy only approximately 3 to 4 months later. For the first two months after the operation, the woman has to wear a compression corset.
After an abdominal plastic operation, a scar from one hipbone to another remains, which must be taken good care of when healing so that it softens and pales. The scar goes rather low, even lower than a Caesarean section if there has been one. Usually, this is completely covered by bikini bottoms.
During the healing period, the patient is advised to avoid physical strain-no heavy lifting or carrying is allowed. After three months, the woman can return to more intense sports activities. Provided that the patient observes the physician’s instructions and the abdominal muscles are not under load due to a weight increase or new pregnancy, the operation does not have to be repeated.
