Removal of the gallbladder is surgery to cure the patient of gallstones and the pain and seizures caused by them, as well as other gallstone symptoms and complications.

Usually, you can engage in light physical daily activity the day after the surgery. Full physical activity is regained within 7-10 days.

Gallbladder surgery at our Centre is almost always carried out with a laparoscope, in the minimally invasive way.

Small incisions are made in places that are known to heal well. Local anaesthetics are used to numb the puncture places, no seams outside. These measures reduce post-surgical pain and prevent post-surgical hernia. In addition, the scars are less visible, and the patient does not need an additional visit to have the stitches removed. Recovery is quick after such operations.

In especially rare cases, when due to a number of adhesions in the abdomen cavity or far advanced acute gallbladder inflammation, it is impossible to have laparoscopic surgery, open gallbladder removal surgery is carried out.

The surgery is the only reliable way to avoid gallstones complications that have a longer and more complicated treatment.

Laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes four minimal incisions in the abdomen wall for insertion of laparoscopic instruments. One of the instruments has an inbuilt video camera. During the surgery, the surgeons observe the procedure on the screen. CO2 gas is blown in to inflate  the abdomen for a better view of the abdominal organs. The gallbladder is removed and pulled out of the abdominal cavity via the incision near the umbilicus (navel). The incision is sutured.

Usually, the patient can go home the day after the surgery.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Usually a sudden and intense pain just below the right breastbone or in the solar plexus area. If there is no intense pain, there are other symptoms that allow gallstones to be suspected: feeling of heaviness after a meal, bitterness, bloated stomach.

Quite often the gallstones are found during an echoscopy of the abdominal organs, which is carried out for other purposes, without any symptoms of gallstone disease.

If a patient suffering from pain postpones the treatment, small gallstones may drop out of gallbladder and clog the whole biliary tree, and the medical condition aggravates much more. Since practically all gallstones are infected, the clog of bile ducts ends up in inflammation – chills with shivering, fever up to 40 °C, yellowing of skin. Sometimes this difficult condition can complicate and turn into acute inflammation of the pancreas, since the pancreatic duct opens at the end of the common bile duct. The condition aggravates and becomes even life-threatening. In such a case, there must be immediate action, and a more complicated surgery is needed.

Medical science has proven that if only the stone is removed and the gallbladder is left, the stones form again and repeated surgery is needed. The weakened gallbladder muscle will never get stronger. The gallbladder wall is not thick, the bile leaks through the seam. When the incision heals, a number of scars form around, which is not good in such a place. It is not worthwhile expecting the gallbladder to function well after it is cut and sutured. Though the gallbladder performs an important function in digestion (bile reservoir), the digestive tract adapts to functioning without the gallbladder, the bile produced by the liver enters the intestine directly. With a good diet – avoiding fried, fat, spicy food – no discomfort is suffered.

Do not delay. Take care of yourself.
