Allergy and respiratory tract treatment

Full examination and comprehensive help, all in one place!

Our Centre can carry out all the tests necessary to accurately determine the cause of a patient’s allergy and offer the most advanced allergy treatments now available.

Data of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) show that today, around 600 million people have allergic rhinitis and 300 million people suffer from asthma. It is estimated that in the coming decade one in two people will experience at least one form of allergy. Morbidity is largely caused by a genetic predisposition.

The most common diseases: atopic dermatitis (more often in children), allergic contact dermatitis, hives (urticaria), food allergy, allergic rhinitis (runny nose), allergic (bronchial) asthma, otitis, allergic conjunctivitis, anaphylaxis, angioedema (swelling), hay fever.

Treatment: All the allergy tests can be carried out in one place, our Centre. Skin prick test results will be available in 15 to 30 minutes, patch test results—in a week (reaction to an allergen is evaluated in different time intervals), blood test results—in 1 to 2 hours or in a week, depending on a test.
Sometimes an elimination diet is used as a diagnostic tool—the patient is advised to remove a potentially allergy-triggering food product from his or her diet for 2 to 4 weeks and then observe the effect of the elimination. In summary, accurate diagnosis in our centre takes from a few hours to a few weeks, depending on the individual case.
Allergies can be treated with allergen avoidance, medication, and allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT), the latter inducing a lasting allergen tolerance through exposure to low doses of the allergen.
Usually medication (antihistamines, glucocorticoids, antileukotrienes, etc.) is prescribed to relieve the symptoms.

It is important to know that if the cause is accurately determined in time, it is absolutely possible to curb the allergy, live comfortably, avoid allergy-induced conditions and often even cure the allergy with immunotherapy.

  • sneezing;
  • itchy, watery eyes;
  • runny or stuffy nose;
  • headache;
  • asthma attacks;
  • shortness of breath;
  • cough.

These common symptoms can often be misinterpreted as indicative of a cold or other non-allergic condition (for example, digestive issues). Therefore, it is worth knowing that, for instance, an allergic runny nose is not accompanied by fever, and allergy symptoms usually last for quite some time and repeat at the same time of the year.

  • skin rash (hives);
  • skin redness;
  • itchiness;
  • swelling;
  • shortness of breath;
  • stomach ache;
  • full-body weakness;
  • dizziness;
  • rapid heart rate;
  • sore throat.

For successful treatment, close cooperation between the allergist and gastroenterologist or dermatologist is often needed, especially if the allergy causes atopic dermatitis or hives, gastritis, enterocolitis or even anaphylaxis for adults. If a patient suffers from allergic rhinitis, the allergist cooperates with the ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

The most important part of the allergist’s job is determining the allergen causing the allergy, because only then does the patient know which allergens to avoid. For example, if the patient is diagnosed with food allergy, a special diet (eliminating food allergens) is recommended. Drug therapy is vital for treating allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, etc.

An effective way to treat allergic rhinitis and asthma is to apply allergen-specific immunotherapy (exposure to the allergen causing the disease). This method helps patients reach long-term remission or even to be completely cured.

Bronchial asthma has been successfully treated with ambulatory care (at home) for years now. Medicine with lasting positive effect is prescribed. The patient on medication can live a normal life, work, study, be active, even workout. Sometimes people may not even suspect that the person next to them has bronchial asthma.
Nowadays this condition is usually treated with inhaled glucocorticoids and long-acting bronchodilators. In its milder forms, low doses are sufficient, and if it gets worse, higher doses are prescribed. Severe asthma is treated with biologic therapy or allergen-specific immunotherapy.

Any food product can trigger an allergic reaction, but there are 7 products that are responsible for about 90% of allergies:

  • eggs;
  • milk;
  • nuts;
  • fish;
  • seafood;
  • wheat;
  • soya.

Other factors that often trigger allergies are:

  • dust mites;
  • mould;
  • contact with animals;
  • insect stings or bites;
  • household chemicals;
    cosmetics.

The main cause of allergies is a genetic factor. Research shows that if the father or mother is allergic, then the likelihood of their children being allergic too can be from 50 to 85 percent.

Lifestyle also contributes. Allergies can be provoked by increasing environmental pollution, heavy household chemical use, processed foods (colouring agents, flavourings, preservatives), stress, bad habits.
