Pure-tone threshold audiometry (audiogram)

An audiogram is a hearing test that helps diagnose hearing impairment in time, helps determine its causes and decide upon a treatment plan. An audiogram is also recommended for patients who have ringing in their ears.

The test allows the main hearing parameter, the hearing threshold at different frequencies, as well as many other hearing characteristics—speech understanding,  discomfort threshold, sensitivity to increased sound intensity, etc. to be evaluated.
An audiogram can be carried out on adults and children (from about 4-5 years of age).
The exam is performed at the ENT’s office.

It is useful to know

  • During the exam, the patient is seated in a sound-proof room.
  • The sound is made and transmitted to the headphones on the patient by a special device, audiometer.
  • Once the patient hears the sound, he or she presses the button of the remote they have in their hand.
  • Graphs, displayed on the screen of the device, help determine whether the hearing impairment is linked to conductive or sensorineural damage.
  • The examination is carried out in several stages: when the patient is wearing headphones, air conduction is measured and hearing threshold is determined; when a special transducer is attached to the patient’s earlobe, bone conduction is measured, and the function of the auditory nerve is determined.
  • Headphones are not used for examinations on young children under about 5 years of age and people with hearing aids or cochlear implants, instead the sound is then generated by acoustic systems such as speakers.

No preparation is required for this examination.

This hearing examination greatly depends on the environment, patient’s fatigue, ability to focus. Therefore, the exam is not applicable to very young children and people who are antisocial or have mental disorders.

The doctor may select other tests that would suit such patients based on their age and mental state. Conclusions and diagnosis are then drawn from the results of several exams.

Hearing deteriorates with age and normal hearing threshold becomes lower (starting from 50 years of age, it decreases by ~10 dB every decade, especially at high frequencies).
