Video head impulse test (vHIT)

The video head impulse test (VideoHIT, VHIT) is a novel, advanced and painless examination method, which helps to detect saccadic eye movements (saccadic eye movements are voluntary eye movements of large amplitude) and to assess the vestibulo-ocular reflex in all semi-circular canals of the inner ear. In other words, this examination allows unilateral or bilateral damage of the inner ear labyrinth, that can cause balance disorders or dizziness to be detected.

VideoHIT test is recommended for patients:

  • suffering from dizziness and balance disorders of different and specified origin;
  • diagnosed with vestibular neuronitis, vestibular schwannoma, Meniere's disease;
  • after cerebral trauma;
  • after infection of the middle ear;
  • after drug poisoning.

VHIT is the only examination that can help the physician to diagnose disorders of each semi-circular canal of the inner ear. The test does not cause nausea, dizziness and is well tolerated.

The VHIT test can be performed on adults and children (aged about 4-5 years and above.

The test is carried out by the ear nose throat physician otoneurologist at the ENT doctor's office.

The examination takes about 30 min and the report is available immediately.

It is useful to know

How the examination is carried out?

  • The examination is carried out in the physician’s office.
  • Special goggles equipped with a camera designed to record eye movements during abrupt impulsive head movements are securely attached to the patient's head. Using special software, the recorded eye and head movements are transformed into corresponding curves that are interpreted by the physician.
  • The data obtained during the test are interpreted with consideration to other symptoms experienced by the patient and are compared with other potential causes of dizziness and balance disorders, such as brain diseases, vascular disorders, cardiovascular diseases, or even medicines that are potentially associated with dizziness as an adverse effect.
  • The data obtained as a result of videoHIT test are interpreted together with the neuroimaging results (head MRI, CT of the temporal bone)

How to prepare

For the 24 hours before the test it is recommended not to take sedatives, or vestibular suppressants as these can distort the test results.
