Good to know

Colonoscopy is performed using intravenous general anaesthesia, so the subject does not experience any discomfort. The examination is supervised by an anaesthesiologist-reanimatologist and the patient does not experience any discomfort.

If polyps are detected during colonoscopy, a separate procedure - endoscopic polypectomy - is carried out to remove them.

General anaesthesia is applied to a patient before examination. The patient is lying on the side during the examination. A special device, a flexible thin endoscope, is slowly introduced through the anus, allowing the doctor to examine the entire large intestine.
The duration of the examination is 15-60 minutes. After examination, the patient is still asleep for a while.
You will spend 2-3 hours at the clinic.

  • After colonoscopy examination you will spend around 1 hour in the waking ward.
  • You may feel bloated, pain. This usually goes away quickly.
  • Within 24 hours after anaesthesia we do not recommend driving a vehicle or operating machines. Abstain from alcohol.
  • Drink enough fluids. You can eat, but do not overeat.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if 1-2 days after a colonoscopy examination: You  experience sudden onset of severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting; body temperature rises above 37.5 ° C, you experience chills; you feel dizzy, faint, increased bowel movement with blood or clots.
  • If the polyps have been removed during the procedure, do not work for a few days, carry or lift heavy items.
  • If you have a biopsy or a polyps removed during the procedure, the histological findings and recommendations regarding follow-up  or repeated procedure will be emailed to you.

Since colonoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia, you should come with an accompanying person because you cannot drive a car after the examination.
