Good to know

Allergy tests are recommended for those who suffer allergy-like symptoms or have a family history of allergies. As much as 85% of allergies are caused by genetic factors.

The blood test measures the level of IgE, a type of antibody. Higher amounts can be a sign that the body overreacts to allergens. A specific IgE allergen test helps to assess the risk of allergic reactions and predict the risk of developing an allergy.
The allergy test profiles that will be used depend on the type of allergy.

Food allergy. The food allergen test kits are usually used for food allergen detection.

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever). This is a seasonal allergy with symptoms occurring when certain plants are flowering and pollinating. The inhalant allergens are detected using the inhalation, atopy or cross-reactions allergen test kits.

Pet allergy. This allergy is triggered by exposure to proteins in the pet's epidermis, fur and saliva. The inhalation, atopy or cross-reactions allergen test kits are used to diagnose this allergy.

Dust mite and mould allergy. Among the most common symptoms are itchy watery eyes, a congested and runny nose. The inhalation, atopy or cross-reactions allergen test kits are used to diagnose this allergy.

Allergy to insect bites and stings (bee, wasp, yellow jacket). The stings often cause a severe reaction and swelling, including an anaphylactic reaction. This allergy is diagnosed with the help of the cross-reactions allergen profiles.

Allergy to chemicals, latex and cosmetics. The allergy mostly manifests itself in a rash and hives.
This allergy is diagnosed with the help of the cross-reactions allergen profiles.

Allergy tests are most accurate when performed when the allergy is at its worst. We recommend that patients try to be in more contact with possible allergens for several days before the tests; patients could spend more time outdoors, have more contact with pets and consume different foods.

You do not need to book a blood allergy test in advance. You can simply call in at the reception.

  • The results of the most popular tests are usually ready in 1-2 hours.
Individual specific allergen tests are sometimes sent to laboratories in Germany. In this case the results are available in 20 working days.
They can be collected at the reception, or we can email them to you upon request.
  • If you wish to have your test results explained, please call the laboratory on (8 5) 247 64 17.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Having assessed your condition and the test results, your allergist or clinical immunologist may refer you for additional skin prick or patch allergy tests.

It is important to understand that allergy treatment may require the involvement of several different professionals. For example, if a food allergy has been diagnosed, an allergist often needs to work together with a gastroenterologist and a dermatologist. The food allergy may manifest itself in different ways. In children it may trigger atopic dermatitis, and in adults it often causes hives, gastritis, enterocolitis or anaphylactic reaction. When treating patients with allergic rhinitis we consult with ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors.
