The most threatening complications of influenza:

  • pneumonia (lung inflammation);
  • inflammation of heart muscle;
  • myocardial infarction

The most effective influenza treatment is when the treatment starts within three days from the onset of the symptoms. During the first days of the disease the most effective are antiviral medicines, later symptomatic treatment is applied (warm liquids, medicines to alleviate nose congestion, etc.).

The person affected with influenza should have rest and stay in a bed. As this infection is very contagious, such home regimen will secure both the patient and surrounding people. Walking while having influenza usually ends up with complications and spread of infection between the colleagues, therefore you should act deliberately, stay at home and get treated.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Blood TESTS do not show whether a person has influenza, as it is a viral disease. However many physicians prescribe blood tests aiming to reject the likelihood of bacterial infections, moreover it happens that the patient can be affected by both bacterial and viral infection. The influenza diagnosis can be confirmed or rejected by the influenza virus test using the nasopharynx secretion sample.

Influenza is a viral infection, thus antibiotic treatment is ineffective. Antibiotics are indicated to treat bacterial infections. It happens that a person concomitantly suffers from both influenza and bacterial infection, which is diagnosed on the basis of blood tests. The the physician prescribes antibiotics to treat bacterial infection rather than influenza. In case of influenza or other viral infections the antibiotic use does not improves condition, does not alleviate pain or control fever. If you want to avoid influenza, you should have timely vaccination and follow basic hygiene rules – wash your hands after being in the public places, ventilate rooms and avoid unnecessary contact with ill people.

Vaccination is the only effective measure against influenza. Influenza can develop in a vaccinated individual, however vaccination soothes the course of the disease and prevents complications. The immunity develops within two weeks after the vaccination.

No one has a natural immunity against influenza, the influenza virus is associated with annual mutations, thus the disease doe not result in immunity and a person can get infected with a newly developed strain of influenza virus in the next year. The virus usually affects young and absolutely healthy people. Unfortunately, healthy nutrition and consumption of vitamins as well as physical activity and conditioning will not help to fight influenza virus.

We recommend to remember the following effective prophylactic measures, which help to prevent influenza: wash your hands frequently, follow the coughing, sneezing etiquette, ventilate the rooms and wipe the touchable surfaces with wet duster regularly, ill people should stay at home and avoid contact with healthy persons, as well as stay away from public places.
