Kidney exams
Almost one in every ten adults has chronic kidney disease. As patients do not experience any symptoms at the onset of the disease, many do not even know that their kidney function is impaired. If chronic kidney disease is diagnosed early, kidney damage can be slowed down or stopped from progressing.
Kidney function may be hindered by cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic infectious diseases as well as long-term use of painkillers. There is a vast number of factors that may come into play but some of them are self-inflicted. Kidney diseases are much more prevalent in smokers and overweight people, so poor lifestyle choices can be the cause of kidney diseases.
Creatinine, urea, uric acid, and cystatin C are some of the main parameters of kidney function. Higher concentrations of these parameters in the blood may be related to impaired kidney function. Increased levels of potassium, sodium, and phosphorus in the blood may also indicate a kidney disease.
Creatinine and cystatin C concentration is an important element in the evaluation of glomerular filtration rate. This measure is calculated based on the patient’s age, weight, and creatinine or cystatin C concentration. It is the most accurate measure of kidney function. It indicates the amount of blood that the kidneys filtrate per unit of time. Based on the glomerular filtration rate, kidney function is evaluated.
Automated urinalysis, also called the general urine test, is one of the most frequently performed lab tests. We recommend undergoing automated urinalysis at least once a year. This test not only helps evaluate kidney function but also plays an important role in detecting kidney and urinary tract infections, as well as liver function disorders.
We recommend undergoing kidney exams if you:
- have kidney disorders or there have been cases of kidney disorders in your family;
- have coronary heart disease;
- have diabetes;
- have high blood pressure;
- have cardiovascular diseases;
- have noticed swelling or puffiness under the eyes in the morning;
- have noticed a change in the colour of your urine;
- experience urination problems;
- have been taking medication that negatively affects the kidneys (especially painkillers) for a long time;
- are overweight;
- drink or smoke a lot.
Kidney disorders often begin without displaying obvious symptoms; therefore, we recommend having prophylactic exams regularly and watching your overall health.
You do not have to schedule an appointment in advance, you can simply check in at reception and request the tests.
