Lead concentration tests are performed if lead poisoning is suspected.
Lead is a heavy metal that is not necessary for regular body function. It enters the human body through the respiratory tract and sometimes is ingested with water and food.

Lead is widely used in many industrial areas:

  • in the production of lead-acid batteries of motor vehicles, ammunition, glass, ceramic glaze, jewellery, toys;
  • as an additive of dyes and paints (pigments), alloys, solders (filler metals), and in cosmetics.

The main sources of lead contaminants in our environment are: landfills, old constructions, building sites, finishing materials, white oil paint, metalworking tools, car services, printing houses, plastics industry, including toys, food cans, and road transport.

Lead tests are done on a blood or urine sample.

You do not have to schedule an appointment in advance, you can simply check in at reception and request to be tested.

Good to know

The main lead exposure routes are the respiratory tract, food and water.

A person can be exposed to lead by:

  • inhaling lead particles in dust or fumes while burning lead-containing materials or melting them, negligently recycling secondary materials, cleaning or removing lead-containing paint, using lead-containing gasoline;
  • ingesting lead-contaminated dust, soil, water (if run through lead pipes), food (if consumed out of tableware made with lead glaze or lead solder, or food cans with lead soldered seams);
  • using cosmetics which contain lead.

Even small amounts of lead can be harmful to the body. Both acute and chronic lead poisoning can cause serious health problems. Lead is prone to build up as the body can only excrete small amounts of it. Usually negative effects of lead remain unnoticed for a long time as the symptoms only become clear after several years or even decades.

Lead can affect almost any organ and the whole body. It causes anaemia, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, immunotoxicity, is toxic to reproduction and negatively affects the cardiovascular system. Lead can also be at the root of gastrointestinal, neurological, metabolic, and endocrine disorders.
