Lithium is usually used to treat bipolar disorders, such as mania or depression, as well as schizophrenia, dementia, and alcohol and drug addiction.

A lithium test is performed to evaluate the concentration of lithium in the body during treatment. The lithium dosage depends on the body mass. It must be administered meticulously because lithium is rather toxic, and it is easy to get lithium poisoning. If lithium concentration in the blood is too low, the treatment will be ineffective, on the other hand, overdose may result in poisoning.

You do not have to schedule an appointment in advance, you can simply check in at reception and request to be tested.

Good to know

The lithium test can be done every few days at the beginning of the lithium treatment in order to adjust the dosage and reach the desired lithium concentration in the body. Later the test is performed regularly following the doctor’s recommendations in order to control the concentration of lithium in the body.

For most patients lithium has some kind of adverse effect, the severity of which usually depends on lithium concentration in the blood. As the lithium levels increase, so does the severity of the adverse effects. The smaller the doses, the less severe the adverse reactions.

Lithium overdose may manifest itself in the following symptoms:

  • dizziness
  • sickness
  • poor coordination
  • tiredness, sleepiness
  • thirst
  • frequent urination
  • rash, pimples
  • muscle spasms
  • therapeutic (treatment) concentration – 0.6-1.2 mmol/l;
  • toxic concentration – more than 1.5 mmol/l;
  • life-threatening concentration – more than 2.0 mmol/l.
  • The report with the test results will be prepared in 2 days.
    It can be picked up at the reception or we can send it via email at your request.
