Zinc (Zn) is important for normal growth, protein metabolism, cell membrane integrity, gene expression, collagen synthesis, the immune system and many other processes in the body. Zinc stimulates cell growth and multiplication and is involved in the metabolism of more than 80 enzymes. Many vital processes would be hindered without zinc.

If there is a deficiency of zinc, the patient may feel unwell and even begin displaying symptoms of some diseases. Unhealthy lifestyle, malnutrition, digestive disorders, or chronic diseases may cause zinc deficiency. It can also be related to intestinal or liver conditions, diabetes, and taking certain medications.

Zinc tests are done on a venous blood sample.

You do not have to schedule an appointment in advance, you can simply check in at reception and request to be tested.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Zinc stores in the body are closely related to other microelements, especially copper, iron, calcium and magnesium, thus, testing the levels of these elements together is recommended. Zinc is absorbed less when iron, calcium and magnesium supplements are taken. Taken at the same time, these microelements compete with each other, i.e. one mineral pushes another out of the body.

The main source of zinc is food. Meat, fish and seafood products contain the most zinc. There is also a lot of zinc in yoghurt, milk and other dairy products. Zinc found in grains, cereals, legumes, nuts, bran, and sprouted wheat is less useful because the body can absorb only a small portion of it.
