Mammology (Breast oncosurgery)

The rate of breast cancer continues to grow in Lithuania. Breast cancer is the most common cancer of women in the world. However, if diagnosed in time, breast cancer can be cured.

The most common diseases and ailments: breast cysts, mastopathy, benign breast lumps (fibroadenoma, phyllodes tumour, adenoma, intraductal papilloma), cyclical/non-cyclical breast pain, fat necrosis, breast cancer, etc.

Treatment: At our Centre, we consult women on all breast diseases and perform all necessary exams and some breast surgeries. If breast cancer is suspected or diagnosed, women are referred to an oncology health facility.

A breast oncosurgeon (mammologist) at our Centre usually diagnoses the disease and prescribes treatment in 1 day.*
*Sometimes for the final diagnosis to be confirmed, an exam which may take more than one day is needed. The doctor or medical staff performing the exam will inform you if this is the case.

For the treatment of breast diseases to be successful, close cooperation between the breast oncosurgeon (mammologist) and endocrinologists, obstetricians-gynaecologists, and other specialists is often needed.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Every woman who is 18 years old or over, has given birth, has had problems breastfeeding, is undergoing treatment with an obstetrician-gynaecologist or endocrinologist should have their breasts screened. However, if a woman experiences growing breast pain before menstruation more than 3 years after giving birth, notices a discharge from the nipples or feels a lump in her breasts, we recommend contacting a doctor without delay, because these may be the signs of mastopathy or other breast diseases. Any woman who has a close relative who has had breast cancer should have breast screening once a year from the time they turn 18.

Women who are 40 years old and over are recommended to have a screening every year.

If there are no indications, women should have their first mammography when they are 40 years old, so that later, when they undergo regular screenings under the breast cancer prevention programme, which is aimed at all 50-70 year-old women, it will be possible to see any changes in the breasts.

Women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, if they:

  • have a genetic predisposition;
  • have benign breast conditions;
  • have been diagnosed with atypical epithelial proliferative changes in the breasts;
  • have never had a full-term pregnancy or have had late pregnancies;
  • have been taking hormone replacement therapy for more than 5 years;
  • have been taking contraceptives for more than 10 years;
  • are overweight;
  • have a poor diet;
  • smoke, consume alcohol;
  • are not physically active.

A higher risk is also associated with starting menstruation early and going through menopause late in life.

Don’t delay, take care of yourself now
