Nose surgery (rhinoplasty)

A harmonised face expression depends on the shape of nose. Before making decision to correct the shape of your nose you should know why you are not satisfied with the current shape of your nose, what is the acceptable and desired shape of the nose

Nasal surgery is one of the most complex plastic surgeries, thus it is very important to choose the establishment and operating physician. A surgeon can eliminate or reduce the nasal hump, to reduce or narrow the nose, to change the shape of the nasal tip, nostrils, the angle between the nose and the upper lip. As many plastic surgeries, the nasal plastics usually essentially change psychological well-being of the person and increase self-confidence after getting rid of the complex.
Nasal plastic surgery can be combined with nasal septum surgery, thus the single surgery can solve aesthetic and health – breathing function disorder.

Nasal surgery is recommended if:

elimination of the defects after the nasal trauma or congenital defects should be corrected or breathing function should be restored;
if correction of the nose shape is desired.

What should you know about the surgery?

What is important before the surgery?

You should inform the physician before the surgery if you:

have any allergy,
take medicines affecting blood coagulations or experience blood coagulation disorders (also thrombosis),
have diabetes mellitus and take medicines,
were diagnosed with cancer,
were treated with injectable corticosteroids within the last 6 weeks,
have a pacemaker implanted,
experience immunosuppression,
feel unwell on the day of the procedure,
got ill before the procedure (fever developed, flue and cold manifested),
are a smoker (It is recommended to abstain from smoking for at least 4 weeks before the surgery).

The medical certificate for absence from work for the patient after the surgery will not be issued, thus, we recommend planning your vacation in advance.

Laboratory tests required before the surgery

General blood count,
blood coagulation test (APTT),
electrocardiogram (ECG) with assessment,
blood glucose level test,
other tests, if you have chronic diseases and the tests were prescribed by your physician.

The patient can bring the test excerpts from other healthcare establishments or to have them done at the Medicine Diagnostics and Treatment centre in 2 hours; the price of tests done at the Centre. The tests should be carried out not later that 14 days ago.

The course of the surgery

The surgery is carried out under a general anaesthesia. Usually the surgery lasts for 2-4 hours. Considering the aim and extent of the surgery, the open or closed surgery technique can be applied. The incision in the internal nasal mucosa are made in the latter case. The scars are not visible from the outside after such surgery.

In case of open surgery the incision of few millimetres are done between the nostrils at the columella region, in which the scars after healing are almost not observable. The open surgery allows easier correction of the nasal tip, thus is applied more frequently.

After the surgery

Swelling and haematomas after surgery resolve within 1 to 3 weeks. In complex cases you may need to use a special splint for 1-2 weeks after the surgery. Nose healing is not associated with any pain, the nose remains hard and insensitive for al long time after the surgery. Face swelling and haematomas resolve in about two weeks. We recommend to have a rest at you home during this period.

If you had the open surgery, the sutures should be removed after 7 days. The procedure is carried out using the pain killers. After the closed surgery sutures are absorbed, thus they do not require to be removed.
It is recommended to avoid using glasses for few months after the surgery, until complete healing of the nasal bones and stabilisation of the nasal shape. Blowing nose is not allowed.
The effect of the surgery is visible immediately after the surgery, but the actual nasal shape can be assessed after few months and the final result - after 1-1.5 year. Healing process depends of teh surgery extent, environmental conditions and is individual, thus the changes occurring during the first half of the year – developing asymmetry and disparity usually disappear in the course of time.
Physical activity is allowed 2-3 weeks after the surgery, the nose should be protected against the trauma for 3-4 months after the surgery.
As after each surgery, complications may occur (such as infection, eye irritation, bleeding), but they are rare and manageable.

General recommendations

Cold compresses. Rest is required during the post-surgical period.

When the nasal plastic surgery cannot be carried out (contraindications)

in case of severe, health threatening diseases, when the general anaesthesia cannot be used,
during pregnancy,
if blood clotting is disturbed;
if you have viral diseases, infections (the surgery can be planned after complete recovery).

Does the aesthetic nasal surgery not interfere with nasal function?

At the Medicine Diagnostics and Treatment Centre we have the consonant team of professionals, thus, if needed before the surgery we have consultations with experienced otorhinolaryngologists. There were certain cases, when otorhinolaryngology surgery was required before the rhinoplasty, however usually we do everything during the single surgery.

Is it possible to choose a nose shape from the catalogue?

Sometimes people want to have a profile like the eminent sportsman or the actor. It is not a bad thing if a person brings to the consultation a photo how he/she sees his/her nose after the surgery, as it is rather difficult to describe everything in words. At the Medicine Diagnostics and Treatment Centre e have the modern modelling softwares, that can produce the 3D images of the patient's face after the surgery. A person can assess more or less, if such correction is acceptable for him /her. In the plastic surgery, which aims to reach the subjective beauty and aesthetic satisfaction it is very important for the patient to have the real expectations.

Understanding the potential risks is also not less important. The computer software produces the image of the face after nose skeleton modification, however, this software still is not able to assess skin thickness, elasticity, subcutaneous tissues and scaring processes.

If we shorten the nose by 4 mm, actually it can become shorter by 3 mm, 2 mm and finally in may not shorten at all. This depends on scaring processes. The person before the surgery should be aware about such risk and accept it. None of the surgeons can give a warranty regarding the rhinoplasty result, though the forty year experience of the surgeons at our Centre shows that the majority of nasal corrections are successful.

What is important before making decision where to have the nasal plastic surgery done?

In the aesthetic surgery patient's trust in the physician is very important. Surgeons at our Centre recommend to have consultations with several plastic surgeons, to clear out all risks and to define real expectations. Of course, the experience has its own value in the medicine, therefore for nasal skeleton modification we recommend to choose a very experienced surgeon.

When the actual result of nasal surgery can be assessed?

You will have to wait for at least one year to see the final result. Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex plastic surgeries. Thus, whatever you correct – a nose tip, nostrils or a nasal skeleton, the result will not be obvious immediately. The first results can be assessed after a half of year after the healing and scaring of the bones and cartilages affected during the surgery and the soft tissues cover and adapt to the newly formed nasal skeleton. This process lasts for another half a year, thus, the final result is assessed after one year.

Can you recognise faces, which underwent rhinoplasty?

Nasal corrections are carried out while preserving the soft tissues, therefore there are no scars and only a small scar between the nostrils can be seen after the open surgery. If the surgery was done correctly, no one can sat the nose is affected by the surgery. Of course, if the eagle nose has been flattered, it can be suspected that it was touched by the surgeon’s hand.
