Formerly patients tried to avoid surgical treatment of varicose veins.

The open surgery of varicose veins involved a large incision; therefore it was associated with a rather long healing period.

However nowadays we have possibilities to identify exactly the problematic area and to carry out surgery on leg varicose veins applying minimally traumatic methods – the laser or biological glue techniques.

Of course, the most favourable is to have the surgery before giving birth, as varicose veins will worsen during your pregnancy. After “obturation” of your damaged vein, the varicose will not progress in this area and you will have your problem solved. You will not experience any more varicose vein-related aesthetic concerns and pain during the most beautiful period in your life – the youth. The myth that the surgery should be delayed up to giving birth is still tenacious since the foretime, when varicose veins have been treated applying open surgery technique and patients experienced a large trauma. Currently the surgery is associated with a minimal trauma and it lasts for 10 to 40 minutes; a patient should stay at the clinic for 1.5 hours only. A patient can stand up and walk away from the surgical table independently and on the same day come back to everyday activities.

A massage and specific ointments – all measures improving micro-circulation are are suitable for prophylaxis before the flight. The higher risk is associated with longer flights, lasting more than 3 hours and especially more than 8 hours. The use of elastic stockings is recommended. Standing up and walking on aircraft board also can be useful; drink enough of fluids and take the necessary medicines with you.

Both laser and biological glue treatment are minimally traumatic techniques. The decision about which method is the best should be taken in each individual case. The substantial difference – dressings and elastic stockings are not required after the biological glue procedure and the patients can immediately return back to their everyday. However glue treatment is more expensive, thus, patients more often prefer laser treatment.

Nowadays there are no age-related limitations, as the modern and minimally traumatic treatment methods are applied – varicose vein laser or glue surgery. Thus, the treatment can be applied both for elderly people and for those, who need treatment for their veins because of other planned surgeries, e. g., hip joint surgery.

The high quality surgery in the vein basin prevents development of relapse, however varicose veins may develop in other area, thus requiring further treatment. However, treatment is necessary, as the problem tends to worsen.
