Morbidity from tick-borne encephalitis in Lithuania is among the highest in Europe—12 out of 100,000 people contract this disease in the country every year. There is no cure for tick-borne encephalitis (only symptomatic treatment) and consequences can be very dire, so vaccination is truly worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Tick-borne encephalitis is inflammation of the nervous system which affects the brain. If not detected in time, it can cause severe complications—paralysis or even death.

Tick-borne encephalitis is usually transmitted with the saliva of a tick during the first minutes of its bite. Because tick bites are painless, almost half of the patients with tick-borne encephalitis say they did not notice the tick at all. The young ticks (nymphs) are especially dangerous. They are almost four times smaller than adult ticks, therefore, it is particularly difficult to see them on your body. Patients can also contract tick-borne encephalitis through the consumption of cow, sheep, or goat milk which has not been thermally processed and from products made from the milk.

  • Fever, flu-like bone and muscle pain and headache (first stage of the disease).
  • A period of seeming recovery that lasts about a week.
  • Damage to the central nervous system (second stage of the disease):
    • headache, nausea and (or) vomiting, neck stiffness;
    • impaired consciousness, thinking, and speech, disorientation, tremor, poor balance and coordination, clonus and other involuntary movements (manifest in about 30% of people infected, or in every third person).
  • Damage to the spinal cord, nerves, and nerve roots comes with the myelitic form, or the third stage, of the disease. It usually manifests in arm or shoulder muscle weakness.

Symptoms can manifest themselves 3-30 days after the infection has entered the human body.

Usually the recommended time for vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis is winter or early spring, which gives enough time for the immunity to build up before the tick season. However, patients can get vaccinated all year round, especially if the immunity has to be acquired quickly. If that is the case, an accelerated vaccination schedule, which makes the immunity develop in a few weeks, is followed.

I dose;

II dose – after 14 days-3 months after the first dose;

III dose – after 5-12 months after the second dose.

A year-long immunity is acquired after two doses. To extend the immunity past one year, the third dose is needed and after that, revaccination every 3-5 years suffices to sustain the immunity. The effectiveness of the vaccine is up to 98%.

Lithuania being in an endemic tick-borne encephalitis zone, vaccination is recommended for all residents. However, people who spend a lot of time in forests or outdoors (forest workers, hunters, hikers) should particularly consider it.

  • Persons allergic to egg whites cannot be vaccinated.

  • Protection against tick-borne encephalitis forms in 2 weeks after the second injection.

In Vilnius, patients can be vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis at our Centre. We use TicoVac vaccines.
