Meningococcal infection (meningococcus) is a very rapid infectious disease. Its most severe clinical forms, sepsis (blood infection) and pyogenic meningitis (inflammation of meninges enveloping the brain and spinal cord), can sometimes lead to death.

How do you protect yourself? Meningococcal infection is airborne, thus, if you are in the risk group (read below), we advise you to strictly follow the necessary hygiene practicesand get vaccinated against meningococcal infection.

Frequently asked questions

Meningococcus may often feel like flu or a cold, therefore, if you notice some or all symptoms listed below, we advise you not to take them lightly and to contact a health facility as soon as possible (especially if the symptoms appear suddenly).

Symptoms of meningococcal infection:

  • fever;

  • headache;

  • vomiting;

  • chills;

  • stiff neck;

  • acutejoint pain;

  • sensitivity to light and sound;

  • skin rash (advanced stage).

Meningococcal infection is air-borne, hence, contracted through the respiratory tract. The incubation period lasts about 4 days on average, then the infection rapidly develops. This disease is dangerous for all age groups, but it most commonly affects children under the age of 5 and adults who experience a lot of stress and have weakened immunity.

The most important thing, in order to avoid meningococcus or meningitis, is to spend as little time with an infected person as possible. If you have failed to avoid the hotbed of an infection, contact your family practitioner for antimicrobial prophylaxis. It is also recommended to:

  • wash your hands regularly;

  • air and clean indoors regularly;

  • get vaccinated against meningococcal infection.

  • infants and teenagers;

  • travellers who go on pilgrimages or travel to countries where meningococcal infection spreads in outbreaks or vaccination is obligatory (Ireland, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, the UK, Greece, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Canada, Cyprus, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany).

  • servicemen.

Vaccination is not recommended or is allowed only with the doctor’s permission, if:

  • you have an acute disease with fever. If the infection is mild, e.g. a cold, vaccination does not have to be delayed;
  • you or your child has trombocytopenia or any other disease impairing coagulation;
  • you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or think that you may be pregnant or plan on getting pregnant.
  • Meningococcal group B vaccines—Bexsero or Trumenba.

  • Quadrivalent meningococcal group A, C, Y, W conjugate vaccines—Menveo or Nimenrix.

More about the vaccines

  • Bexsero is designed to actively immunize2-month old infants and older persons, Trumenba – children from 10 years of age, teenagers and adultsagainst meningococcal infection caused by the meningococcus group B (Neisseria meningitidis).

  • The quadrivalent meningococcal group A, C, Y, W conjugate vaccine is designed to protect adults, teenagers and children over 6 weeks old frominvasive meningococcal disease caused by four groups of meningococcus, A, C, W-135, and Y (Neisseria meningitidis).
